Unique experiences on this trip

Luxembourg – DAKAR

At 06:50 flight with Luxair to Dakar. Arrival at 12:10 in Dakar and transfer to the hotel. Afterwards city tour in Dakar: short city tour with a visit to the most important sights of the capital: the Cathedral of African Remembrance with its Byzantine architecture, the Presidential Palace with its red guards, the Independence Square with its colonial buildings in contrast to modern high-rise buildings, the railroad station and the typical spice market. Visit to the artisan village of Soumbédioune with various trades (basket makers, sculptors, weavers, jewelers) and a gallery of sand paintings. Return to the hotel.

DAKAR – GOREE – LAC ROSE

Departure in the morning to the port of Dakar. Crossing by boat to the island of Gorée. Gorée is an island steeped in history, marked by the tragic history of the slave trade. Visit to the Fort d’Estrées, which today houses the historical museum, and the House of Slaves. Walk to the cliff of the island, called Castel, with a view of the “Mémorial Gorée-Almadies” monument. Continue to the Pink Lake. The lake was formed from a lagoon that was cut off from the sea by shifting dunes in the 15th century. It lies just a few hundred meters from the ocean in the middle of dunes and scrubland. In addition to the color, the high salt concentration is remarkable – second only to the Dead Sea in the world. Women from the surrounding villages extract salt from the seabed. The visit to the salt fields shows you how the Peulh women mine the salt with picks – an important source of income for many families. Followed by an off-road vehicle ride through the sand dunes around the lake – an unforgettable experience.

DAKAR – JOAL – PALMARIN

Drive to the Sine Saloum region – a natural area of 180,000 hectares in the north of The Gambia and south of the Petite-Côte in the Saloum Delta National Park. The delta is formed by the confluence of the Sine and Saloum rivers. It is an estuary that increasingly brings salt water inland, as the rivers only flow slowly. Stopover in Joal-Fadiouth. This small community consists of two villages, connected by a wooden bridge, as Fadiouth is an island. The three islands of Fadiouth are not accessible by car. Joal is an elongated town. Fadiouth is made entirely of shells! Visit the village with its main street, called the “Champs-Élysées”. Other sights: the millet storehouses built on stilts, the shell cemetery, where Christians and Muslims rest together, and the one-armed crabs. Onward journey to Palmarin. Check-in at the hotel.

PALMARIN

Departure for a wonderful day trip in a dugout canoe through the Saloum Delta. You cross the mangroves and glide calmly through the water to discover the rich flora and fauna of this region. Observation of numerous bird species in the delta. Lunch on an island. Opportunity to relax or swim before continuing the boat tour. Return to the hotel.

PALMARIN – DJILOR – DJIFFER – PALMARIN

Drive towards Djilor via the pretty village of Yayem. Visit to the MAHICAO Museum, which is dedicated to Africa’s cultural heritage. Then continue to the port of Djiffer, where there is a lot of activity: boats are loaded or unloaded, fish is traded, scaled and dried directly on the boat, nets are repaired. Return to the hotel. In the afternoon, demonstration of traditional Senegalese wrestling – a very popular sport in the country. Music and dance in the evening: village women present traditional Serrere songs and dances.

PALMARINE – BANDIA – MBOUR – SALY

Departure to the “Petite Côte”. Visit to the Bandia Game Reserve, approx. 65 km south of Dakar. The 3000-hectare fenced nature reserve is surrounded by baobab forests and African savannahs. The animals live here in complete freedom and safety. Possible animal sightings: Giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, elands, buffaloes, monkeys, warthogs, jackals, mongooses… A variety of birds (approx. 120 species), ostriches, giant tortoises and crocodiles can also be spotted. A special baobab was once used as a burial site for griots. Afternoon drive to Mbour: visit to the traditional market and the village, followed by a visit to the handicraft market with textiles, masks and many typical products from Senegal and neighboring countries. Then visit to the harbor for the return of the fishermen. Drive to the hotel and check-in.

SALY

Departure on an exciting tour through bush tracks, past Peulh and Wolof villages. Stops provide an insight into the life of the local population. Visit to families at home with the opportunity to exchange ideas. Visit to a school and a health center that still competes with the practice of traditional healers. Local lunch in the village. Return to the hotel. Free time.
